Benefits to Alaskans through this program may include child care assistance, job preparation, and work assistance. Including Assistance to Families with Former Dependent Children, the program provides a variety of benefits and services to federally recognized tribes, American Indian and Alaska Native families.

Benefits under the Alaska Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program may include child care assistance, job preparation, and work assistance. Who is eligible for Alaska TANF Program

To receive benefits of the Alaska TANF Program, citizens are required to meet all the eligibility criteria given below. Which is as follows:

• Native Americans/American Indians will be eligible for this program.
• Applicants who are unemployed or about to become unemployed will be eligible for this.
• Applicants enrolled in a federally recognized American Indian tribe or Alaska Native village are eligible.
• People living on or near Indian reservations will be eligible.
• Your financial situation is known as low income or very low income.

The main purpose of establishing the Alaska TANF Program is to support programs designed to provide assistance to needy families in the state by enabling children to be cared for in their own homes or in the homes of relatives; Reduce reliance on public benefits by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage; Preventing and reducing the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies; and encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.

ATAP changed the traditional focus of the state’s public assistance program for needy families to an employment-focused program from an entitlement under the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. Temporary Assistance stresses family self-sufficiency through employment. 

Alaska TANF Program Income Limits 2024

• For people to receive temporary assistance through the Alaska TANF Program, a family must have less than $2,000 in countable resources.
• If a household includes someone age 60 or older, the limit must be $3,000.
• Resources that are not counted include the family home, household goods and personal property, and most vehicles.
• A family's countable income under the Alaska TANF Program must also be below the ATAP income limit.
• When an adult goes to work, a portion of their earnings are set aside as an incentive to work. The amount of neglect reduces over a period of five years.
• The amount of cash assistance a family receives depends on family size, income and shelter expenses. Benefits are reduced for families with lower shelter costs.
• Additionally, in families where there are two parents and both are able to work, only one parent is included in the household size.

Alaska TANF Program Work Requirement Guidelines 2024

The goal of the Alaska TANF Program is to move Alaskans into jobs so they can support their families. To achieve this goal, the program uses a "work first" approach. Work First believes that the best way to succeed in marked labor is to get a job, then develop more skills and work habits on the job to advance and help leave.

Temporary Assistance participants are required to seek paid employment. Individuals who cannot find immediate paying employment participate in activities that focus on gaining skills and experience that lead directly to employment, and increasing family self-reliance. Such activities include community work experience, job skills and life skills training, adult basic education, and GED preparation.
